2018 Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup Raises Awareness for Ocean Protection

October 19, 2018

On September 28th, Reeve Consulting partnered with It’s Your Time and Fresh Start Recycling to host a Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup event on Granville Island and through False Creek.  We had over 30 enthusiastic volunteers, including families and people of all ages, removing plastics and other harmful litter from the foreshore.

Why do we do this every year?  We believe in taking care of what we love, close to where we work and play.  My home is on the shores of English Bay and I love open water swimming in the Bay. I love the Cleanup because it’s a homegrown Vancouver initiative that started in Stanley Park—right in my backyard.  I’m very proud that it has now expanded across the country and is now under the care of Ocean Wise, a global conservation organization focused on protecting and restoring our world’s oceans.

We also host this event because we enjoy hanging out with our friends and celebrating the ‘small wins’ that make a big difference in the long run. We felt empowered by putting our values into action, and everyone’s hard work earned appreciative comments from the local community.  From the conversations we had, I’m sure we inspired more than a few Vancouverites to be mindful of plastic waste and keep our shorelines clean.

We look forward to seeing you out next year!
